Our Innovative Approach to Temporary Part Markings
Not every precision machining customer wants permanent part markings, but temporary markings tend to be sloppy and time-consuming, made with stickers, tape, and (often messy) handwriting.
Because we’re committed to delivering the best services and products for our customers, we developed our own solution for adding non-permanent markings to your parts. Our precision machine shop’s completely custom method is adhesive-free, neatly legible, fast, and temporary!
Automated, Temporary Part Marking…with a Sharpie?!?
You read that right! The Accurate CNC team designed and built a “Sharpie Tool” that we run through our CNC router services. Yes, it really is that simple.
We built a tool.
That holds a Sharpie marker.
And our routers write with it.
We built the Sharpie Tool with YOU in mind
Our Sharpie Tool is indispensable when you need installation or assembly markings added to your parts. Sure, you could pay the heftier price of laser engraving, but why pay for permanence you don’t need?
To offer our precision machining customers a better option, we designed a tool that houses a Sharpie marker. After affixing the tool to a router, we program the machine to draw assembly numbers, paint lines, directional symbols, text instructions, or any other temporary markings you specify. We ensure the marker only lightly touches the material by turning the router’s spindle rotation OFF. The result is precise, consistent, legible handwriting—or perhaps we should say “router writing.”
Sharpie Tool Part Markings Simplify Assembly
While our Sharpie Tool’s part markings aren’t permanent, they are durable, meaning they’ll be there to aid your team during installation or assembly. And because our Sharpie Tool method is quick and cost-effective, there’s no reason not to add part markings that simplify your team’s task.
Take a look at this drawing—the one that looks a bit like a puzzle.
Each outline represents a wall piece for a customer’s reading cabin. To help our customer assemble the unusually shaped pieces in the proper order, we used our Sharpie Tool to draw reference numbers on the back of each piece.
The best materials for Sharpie Tool markings
Any material we machine can be marked with our Sharpie Tool, though some hold the ink better than others.
Sharpie marks are especially durable on parts made from wood, like the reading cabin. The small numbers will disappear under stain or paint, or they can be quickly removed with a few dabs of isopropyl alcohol or some light spot sanding.
Because Sharpie ink is not chemical-resistant, we don’t typically recommend the Sharpie Tool for materials like UHMW, which wipes clean with little to no effort.
